Rex Dsouuza is a Mumbai-born singer who reached a national audience as a finalist on Fame Gurukul in 2005 — where he also picked up the show's "Mr. Gurukul" title — and who has spent the two decades since building a career across playback work and the live stage. Every date he currently has listed is at the bottom of this page, live from the platform.

A playback voice, not a folk voice — and that is the point

Most of the names on an American garba poster come up through Gujarati folk. Dsouuza did not. He came up through a Hindi-language talent show and into playback, and he sings in Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi and mixed-language sets.

On a garba floor, that produces a specific kind of evening. A folk specialist rewards the dancers who already know the steps — longer traditional runs, tighter tempo discipline, less playback. A playback singer with range does something different: he serves three generations in the same room without a seam, moving between the film hits the cousins came for and the traditional material their parents did.

Neither is better. They are different nights, and knowing which one you are buying is most of what makes a garba worth the drive.

The band is the other half

Dsouuza tours with a five-piece live band and plays sets of roughly two to two and a half hours. That is a meaningful distinction on a circuit where a good deal of the calendar runs to a track.

A live rhythm section can stretch a song because the floor is full and shorten one because it is not. It can hold a tempo through the long middle stretch of the night when a recorded set simply plays what it was going to play. For dancers, that responsiveness is the difference between a floor that builds and a floor that resets every four minutes.

Where he plays

He is a regular on the US Navratri and garba circuit, with live band nights played in New Jersey, Dallas, San Jose, Chicago and Atlanta. His dates on Rameelo are listed live below — the block reflects the current calendar rather than the schedule as it stood when this was written.
